Looking Back...

Bob Rothrock remembers the Pennsy in Erie.

Maybe the energy crisis will get really bad.

Steamers await Penn Central's call in OD yard, 1972. Can anyone id which railroad ran these steamers? (photos by Don Murphy)

Erie Docks at the turn of the (last!) century.

The following photos are from the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division,
Detroit Publishing Company Collection.

They were taken in 1900-1901 and show the Pennsylvania Railroad
operations on the Erie bayfront.

rail pic Anchor Line docks and Penna. R.R. [Pennsylvania Railroad] coal & ore docks, Erie, Pa.

"This is an excellent overview of all of the P&E docks in Erie. However, they were not all Anchor Lines docks, only some. From left (west) to right (east) we have:

1. The large structure at the end of Dock 5 (E&P also had a Dock 5, which is confusing) is the PRR Grain Elevator built 1867, later expanded and burned 1915, operated at that time by the Erie & Western Transportation Co - Anchor Line (owned by the PRR 1900-1912), later operated by Western Stevedoring Co.

2. The low flat building is on Dock 6, the Anchor Lines passenger and freight terminal.

3. The gravity coal unloading trestle is on Dock 7, the P&E coal dock. It was replaced in 1910 by a McMyler car dumper. BTW they unloaded Canadian cord wood on the west side of that dock for Hammermill.

4. Lastly Dock 8 the P&E ore dock, which was originally the P&E's coal dock until 1888, when that operation was transferred to the larger trestle on Dock 7. It was later expanded from a stub track operation to a loop track operation."

"This is the E&P ore trestle, which ran out on to Dock No. 2. .Note that the cars on the trestle area few of the 100 three truck class GX, later reclassed as UB. The E&P had 20, the PY&A 80." (Description by Al Buchan)

"The dock on the left is Dock 2 the E&P coal dock, which also shows the end or the ore trestle from the previous photo. The dock on the right is Dock 1, one of the two E&P ore docks." (Description by Al Buchan)

"The dock on the left is the E&P Dock 1 ore dock, the one on the right is the E&P Dock 4 ore dock leased to and operated by Carnegie Steel." (Description by Al Buchan)
rail pic Ore and coal docks, Erie, Pa.

"The area on the left where the hoppers are stored is E&P Dock 3, which did not jut out into the water, but was along the shore line, the dock to the right is the E&P Ore Dock 4. E&P Dock 5, about which little is known was just east of Dock 4 and like Dock 3 did not jut out into the water. It like Dock 3 was used for rail car storage. This was the end of the E&P facilities. If you look real hard you can see the P&E grain elevator in the far distance, through the haze on the other Dock 5. (Description by Al Buchan)

Judging from the shadows, Don Murphy believes the freight leaving the yard is the BEC-2, Erie to Buffalo. (Don Murphy Collection)

I had this problem using Netscape 3.0 on Windows '95 with 256 colors. I did not have a problem

List of locomotives assigned to Erie (?), 10/1/1931

This list is taken from the form MP229 with the above date. The Erie road foreman (ARF#431) was determined because of the presence of Automatic Train Control equipment on the K4's. If anyone can confirm or refute this logic, please let me know!
